Fibers and proteins among Naturex’s expansion and diversification strategy

24 Nov 2017 --- Over the past months, Naturex has moved to boost its presence in the natural nutrition market with the acquisition of Swedish Oat Fiber, a specialized manufacturer of oat dietary fibers, oils and proteins, as well as the signing of a global distribution agreement via its Open Innovation program (Ingenium) with a Colorado-based start-up, MycoTechnology, for their PureTaste, shiitake mushroom plant protein created by patent-pending fungi fermentation technology.

A&B achieves probiotic patent for treatment of chronic digestive diseases

22 Nov 2017 --- A&B Ingredients’ probiotic PA5051 has been issued a new patent as a method for treatment of chronic digestive diseases. The new patent covers both inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD) and nonspecific enteropathy (NEP), and can be used as a treatment for both humans and animals.

Fermentalg announces signing of distribution agreement for DHA-rich oils and Q3 2017 successes

21 Nov 2017 --- French microalgae specialist Fermentalg has signed a first distribution agreement for algal oils with specialty chemicals and food ingredients company IMCD Group. The news comes as Fermentalg publishes its business review for the third quarter of 2017, with highlights including its strategic partnership with DIC Corporation in pigments and successfully raising €12.6 million (US$14.8 million) in funds as part of a capital increase.

Roadmap: Researchers publish recommendations for successful EU health food claims

14 Nov 2017 --- Researchers have developed recommendations to help food companies successfully substantiate new health claims in the EU. During this study, published in the highly regarded Trends in Food Science & Technology, researchers from the University of Surrey worked with investigators in Slovenia and Denmark as part of the REDICLAIM project. Together, they clarified the process of attaining approval for new health claims on food products.

BASF plant fire: Force Majeure for vitamins and carotenoids at Citral plant

10 Nov 2017 --- BASF has announced that it has shut down its Citral plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and has had to declare Force Majeure for its Citral- and Isoprenol-based aroma ingredients following a fire on October 31 during the startup of the plant.

Glanbia seals US convenience store expansion with major Kum & Go deal

10 Nov 2017 --- Glanbia Performance Nutrition (GPN) has announced that beginning this week, 344 locations of the family-owned US convenience store Kum & Go will offer GNP's Cake Bites in the Chocolate Frosted Donut and Berry Cheesecake flavors. GPN’s Optimum Nutrition Cake Bites, described as “whipped, bite-sized cakes that satisfy snack cravings with high-quality dairy protein and much less sugar than most candy options.” 

Ajinomoto enters US medical foods market with Cambrooke Therapeutics acquisition

09 Nov 2017 --- Ajinomoto Co. Inc has acquired an equity position in US medical foods company Cambrooke Therapeutics, Inc through Ajinomoto North America, Inc. (Ajina) for approximately US$64 million and made it a wholly owned subsidiary. Founded in 2000, Cambrooke develops and manufactures medical foods for patients with amino acid metabolism disorders and other customers. 

Frutarom fortifies portfolio with acquisition of AB-Fortis activity

08 Nov 2017 --- Frutarom has signed an agreement with AB-Biotics S.A. of Spain for the acquisition of the activity of AB-Fortis. The patent-protected micro-encapsulation technology enables delivery of iron with increased biological absorption while avoiding the side effects of metallic taste and digestive problems in the applications of functional foods and dietary supplements.

BASF to enter US medical foods market with product to manage NAFLD

06 Nov 2017 --- BASF and DIEM Labs have entered into a distribution agreement to commercialize BASF’s first US medical food product for the dietary management of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). As part of this agreement, BASF has announced that it will use its scientific expertise and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities to provide a first-to-the-market medical food product to patients with NAFLD. 

Omega 3 fatty acids linked to more positive lupus outcomes by study

06 Nov 2017 --- Higher intake of omega 3 fatty acids was associated with better sleep quality and a decrease in depressive symptoms in lupus patients, among other patient-reported outcomes, according to new research findings presented at the 2017 American College of Rheumatology/Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, US.

DSM’s Nutrition segment contributes strongly to “very good” Q3 performance

02 Nov 2017 --- DSM’s results for the first nine months of 2017 show strong outcomes in the company’s nutrition sector. Overall highlights of the results, buoyed by an especially impressive Q3 performance, include a 9 percent increase in sales to €6.46 billion (US$7.51 billion), with 8 percent organic growth. The adjusted EBITDA is up 15 percent to €1.08 billion, driven by both Nutrition and Materials, and the company’s outlook for 2017 is unchanged.

Glanbia Performance Nutrition “main driver” of company’s revenue growth in first nine months of 2017

01 Nov 2017 --- Global nutrition group Glanbia plc. has highlighted strong performances from Glanbia Performance Nutrition and Glanbia Nutritionals in its Interim Management Statement for the nine-month period ending on September 30 2017. The highlights include a 9 percent increase in revenues for Glanbia Performance Nutrition and a 4.6 percent revenue growth for Glanbia Nutritionals.
 

Roquette focuses on “patient-friendly” dosage forms

DSM, UNICEF and Sight and Life partner up to deliver improved nutrition to Nigerian children and mothers

31 Oct 2017 --- Royal DSM, UN children’s agency UNICEF and Swiss-based humanitarian nutrition think tank Sight and Life have partnered to deliver better nutrition to at-risk children and mothers in Nigeria. The partners will also advocate on a global scale for micronutrient supplementation. As part of the project, DSM is to offer essential vitamins, nutrients and fortification solutions as well as expertise that complements the research, programs, and global reach of UNICEF and Sight and Life.
