Bad for the bones: Average calcium intake varies widely around world, study notes

30 Oct 2017 --- A new study led by an International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) research committee has found that daily average calcium intake among adults varies widely around the world. Critically low intake was found in certain Asian, African and Latin American countries, while studies showed nearly double the intake in many European countries and the US.

Natreon antioxidant provides relief for joint issues in healthy overweight subjects: study

23 Oct 2017 --- Ayurvedic products company Natreon’s AyuFlex significantly improved joint mobility, comfort and functional capacity in healthy overweight subjects. This is according to a study into AyuFlex, the clinically studied and standardized aqueous extract of the fruits of Terminalia chebula, recently published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. AyuFlex is a potent antioxidant and previous studies have noted the efficacy of AyuFlex for modulating inflammation and oxidative stress, the Natreon press release notes.

Vitamin D activation pathways in inflammation and bone health uncovered

17 Oct 2017 --- Researchers have identified a region of the genome that regulates vitamin D activation in the kidneys, opening the door for more sophisticated treatments of diseases, including bone and immune disorders, involving vitamin D. The results of this research will be published in the October 20 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Valensa International obtains two US patents for joint health formulations

04 Oct 2017 --- The US Patent and Trademark Office has awarded Florida-based Valensa International two new patents, locking down patent protection for the core ingredients related to the company’s FlexPro MD and FlexPro ES. In clinical trials, these dietary formulations for joint health were shown to be three to five times more effective in relieving joint discomfort than a standard commercial formulation of glucosamine and chondroitin.

These are the main conclusions of a clinical essay presented by Professor Jean Pierre Pelletier at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology, held in Madrid. Conducted by Bioiberica, the MOSAIC clinical essay (a 24-month study on structural changes in knee osteoarthritis assessed by MRI with Chondroitin sulfate) is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled and comparative study, carried out in five medical centers in Quebec (Canada).

Children with Low Vitamin K2 Status at Greater Risk for Fracture: Study

14 Jun 2017 --- A new study abstract presented at the International Conference on Children’s Bone Health in Würzburg, Germany, has highlighted the increased risk of fracture in children with low vitamin K2 status. While vitamin D has an established role in the prevention of fractures, this is the first study to evaluate both D and K2 status in healthy children with low-energy fractures (i.e., the result of falling from standing height or less) and in the control group without fractures.

Weight Loss Can Slow Knee Joint Degeneration: Study

02 May 2017 --- Overweight and obese people who lost a substantial amount of weight over a 48-month period showed significantly lower degeneration of their knee cartilage, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology. According to the National Institutes of Health, obesity is a risk factor for osteoarthritis. Being overweight or obese can place extra pressure on joints and cartilage, causing them to wear away. In addition, people with more body fat may have higher blood levels of substances that cause inflammation in the joints, raising the risk for osteoarthritis.
