Supplements with Lycopene or Lutein Protect Skin Against UV Radiation

01 Nov 2016 --- Lycored have announced the publication of its paper in the British Journal of Dermatology. Within the paper, scientists show that, when assuming the role of genes as indicators of oxidative stress, photo-dermatoses and photo-aging, Lycopene-Rich Tomato Nutrient Complex, and lutein provide protection against solar radiation-induced health damage.

The research supports the increasing evidence of, as well as furthers the assertion of photo-protection by oral supplementation with carotenoids. The study builds upon a growing body of research explaining the role in which antioxidants play in human skin health and overall protection against solar radiation.

Specifically, the paper sheds light on a particular niche within this field of research: how Lycopene-Rich Tomato Nutrition Complex (TNC) and lutein can protect against UVA/B- and UVA1 radiation at a molecular level.

“This study suggests that we are slowing down the aging process, because it prevents the damages caused by UV exposure, including expressions of genes that are biomarkers for skin photo-aging, and oxidative stress on the skin," says Karin Hermoni, Ph.D. and Category Manager at Lycored.  "On top of that, as part of the photo-aging process we have evidence of the effect of our ingredients on the levels of expression of genes involved in collagen degradation, suggesting a link not only to skin health but also to skin appearance. This study suggests an effect of natural antioxidants on overall skin wellness which, is relevant for men and women in all age groups.”

The concept was tested in a placebo-controlled, double blinded, randomized cross-over study. Two actives containing either Lycopene-Rich Tomato Nutrition Complex (TNC) or lutein were assessed for their capacity to decrease the expression of UVA1/UVB radiation-inducible genes, including heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1). Sixty-five healthy volunteers were allocated to four treatment groups and subjected to a two-week wash-out phase, followed by two twelve-week treatment phases separated by another two-week wash-out.

Results from this study revealed Lycopene-Rich Tomato Nutrition Complex (TNC) completely inhibited UVA1 as well as UVA/B induced upregulation of HO-1, ICAM-1 and MMP1 mRNA, no matter of sequence (ANOVA, p<0.05). The actives containing lutein also showed benefits on the same biomarkers, with the maximal effect achieved when lutein supplementation was provided prior to the placebo.
