Algatechnologies Announces Verification by the Non-GMO Project
01 Feb 2016 --- Verification by the Non-GMO Project (NGP) ensures that AstaPure natural astaxanthin products are produced in compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard, including ongoing testing of high-risk ingredients. The Certification of Compliance, together with the NGP seal, was received last month.
AstaPure astaxanthin is sourced from the Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, cultivated at Algatech’s Arava desert facility, in a closed tubular environmentally protected system, utilizing natural sunlight twelve months a year. Astaxanthin is extracted from the microalgae biomass using supercritical CO2 technology, without any solvents. This controlled sustainable process guarantees the highest quality of natural bioactive ingredients, and complete traceability.
“The Non-GMO Project Verification is an important recognition of Algatech’s strong commitment to North American and global customers” states Efrat Kat, Marketing & Sales Director for Algatech. “The AstaPure brand includes a wide range of natural Astaxanthin oleoresin, beadlets and powder solutions. AstaPure is among the first Astaxanthin ingredients to be verified by the NGP.” Kat continues: “During 2016, we are planning further investments in new product development and market launches”.
Astaxanthin, a dark red functional pigment, is a member of the carotenoid family. It is the main carotenoid found in algae, the food source for fish and crustaceans. Astaxanthin is an extremely powerful antioxidant, more than 500 times stronger than tocopherol (Vitamin E), and much more potent than other carotenoids such as lutein, lycopene and β-carotene.
“In 2015, Algatech completed a major expansion project and improved efficiencies in order to meet new market challenges,” notes Ronnie Meninger, company CEO. “We also strengthened our commitment to new science revealing important astaxanthin health benefits.”
Algatech is a member of NAXA (the Natural Algae Astaxanthin Association). In response to the growing problem of adulteration within the dietary supplements industry, NAXA members are collaborating to educate brand manufacturers and consumers on the importance of sourcing natural astaxanthin derived from Haematococcus pluvialis.
The Non-GMO Project offers North America’s only independent verification for products made according to rigorous best practices for GMO (genetically modified organisms) avoidance.
