05 Dec 2018 --- The UK government’s Science and Technology Committee’s “Energy drinks and children” report has concluded that societal concerns could justify a ban on the sale of energy drinks to children, but found that the current quantitative evidence alone is not sufficient to warrant statutory legislation – for now. This comes despite a range of British health experts urging the UK government to push on with its proposals to ban energy drink sales to under-18s amid concerns over the potential negative impacts of excessive caffeine consumption on mental and physical health.

13 Nov 2018 --- An extract obtained by cooking beef could improve exercise performance and lessen post-exercise fatigue, a mice study published in Nutrients has found. The study sought to evaluate the potential beneficial effects of beef extract on exercise performance, as well as the related role of the gut microbiota. Although the extract was found to improve exercise performance by preserving muscle glycogen, it was independent of any relationship with the gut microbiota.

Peptides are biologically occurring short chains of amino acids, with some acting as potent signaling molecules in the body.

23 Oct 2018 --- Provexis’ patented tomato extract has increasingly moved into sports nutrition applications, with Niamh O’Kennedy, Director of R&D, noting she is “optimistic” for a future sports nutrition health claim. DSM markets Provexis' tomato extract as Fruitflow, which has over 30 platelet compounds and is said to counteract the adverse effects of over-exercise on inflammation. Such effects of exercise are not understood enough by those who perform at high levels, such as professional athletes and marathon runners, O’Kennedy explained at the Food Valley Summit, held in Wageningen, the Netherlands on October 10th.

15 Oct 2018 --- Potentially harmful active pharmaceuticals continue to be identified in US over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplements commonly marketed for sexual enhancement, weight loss or muscle building, according to a study published in JAMA. The researchers analyzed US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings from 2007 through 2016 to show that unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients were identified in 776 dietary supplements. In response, US health bodies and trade associations are calling for consumer caution and reform to ensure supplements are free from pharmaceutical contamination.

According to the researchers involved in the study, these initial results open the door for additional studies to explore further the role of carotenoids and tomato phytonutrients in complementing an active lifestyle and allowing people to optimize the benefits of exercise. The results of the study have been published in the peer-reviewed scientific periodical, International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism.
