08 May 2014 --- Lallemand Health Solutions has introduced the latest addition to its portfolio of probiotic offers with the launch of ORAL HEALTH solutions. This new offer combines proprietary documented probiotic strains and adapted dosage forms and formulation capabilities to design custom oral health solutions to maintain the oral microflora balance and support oral health.

Since the digestive tract starts in the mouth, this new offer enables the company to complement its gut health range and provide consumer a holistic ‘digestive well-being’ approach: from the mouth... to the gut!

Oral health conditions (tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontal diseases, halitosis, candidiasis...) affect billions worldwide and have a significant negative impact on people’s health, but also their quality of life, well beyond the “nice teeth” aesthetic consideration. This is the reason why the World Health Organization Global (WHO) Oral Health Programme focuses on prevention and the systematic integration of oral health within general health programmes.

Most oral health conditions appear to have a bacterial component, and a balanced oral microflora seems to be a key to maintaining good oral health. In this context, certain probiotics properties and mechanisms of action (competition with pathogens, anti-microbial activity, immuno-modulation) appear relevant to the oral cavity issues. The idea of applying probiotic to maintain oral health is becoming increasingly popular among the dental profession and consumers. It does represent a positive approach vs. the common antiseptic approach and appears as more natural, targeted and gentle approach to maintain a positive microflora balance. Two recent clinical studies conducted in children with a combination of probiotic strains from Lallemand Health Solutions portfolio indicate an efficacy in reducing the salivary count of cariogenic bacteria S. mutans (Jindal et al., 2011); and reducing dental plaque formation, when compared to placebo, and to traditional antiseptic mouthrinse (Thakkar, et al., 2013).

The new Oral Health offer contains a range of Lallemand proprietary documented strains, various Lactobacilli and two Streptococci salivarius, whose properties and modes of action are relevant to the oral microflora balance (e. g. H2O2 synthesis, inhibition of certain oral pathogens, anti-inflammatory activity...). In addition to this unique portfolio, Lallemand Health Solutions offers the expertise to formulate these strains into adapted dosage forms (e.g. xylitol-based orodispersible powders, chewable tablets...). It is thus possible to develop innovative solutions to answer consumers demand for natural, gentle, preventive oral care solutions to maintain a positive oral environment and microflora, which can contribute to good overall oral health.

Lallemand Health Solutions other established health areas of applications include: gut health, immunity, stress and emotional equilibrium and women’s health.
