Sabinsa to launch almond-based protein powder ingredient
27 Sep 2017 --- Sabinsa Corporation has announced the launch of Promond, the company’s first protein powder ingredient, based on almond. The US-headquartered manufacturer, supplier and marketer of herbal extracts, cosmeceuticals, minerals, dietary supplements and specialty fine chemicals is launching the ingredient at SupplySide West in Las Vegas in the US.
“Promond is a new protein source from a well-known food component which is completely vegan and GMO-free,” Shaheen Majeed, President Worldwide, Sabinsa, tells NutritionInsight. “Promond is completely water soluble and has good stability, so it can be easily packaged in RTD and protein mixes to be added in protein shakes.”
“Promond has a naturally desirable almond flavor, requiring no masking,” Majeed adds. “Promond can be also formulated in protein snacks and bars. The complete amino acid profile shows a good amount of BCAA and can also help to provide a balanced protein diet to people of all ages and walks of life.”
Unlike whey protein supplements where raw material traceability coming from grass-fed cows can be complicated, Sabinsa notes that its almond protein is a vegan protein sourced locally from the northern belt of India where the majority of almond cultivation takes place. The area of almond cultivation is well equipped with water resources, and the protein processing is done by completely green technology with minimum wastage of resources, according to Majeed.
Sabinsa also reassures those concerned about almonds grown in California because of heavy water use in drought conditions that they won’t have to worry. He notes that Promond is made from almonds sourced in northern India.
At SupplySide West, Sabinsa is giving away a book on the company’s patented black pepper extract, BioPerine. While this ingredient has been widely used to enhance the bioavailability of other nutrients as well as for its thermo-nutrient properties, the book explores many new uses backed by research findings. The book, BioPerine – Nature’s Own Super Nutrient, was written by several of the company’s scientists, including Dr. Muhammad Majeed, founder of Sabinsa Corporation.
Looking to the future, since Sabinsa has a strong sports nutrition range of products spanning pre-workout, post-workout and maintenance functions, Majeed says its customers have asked that Sabinsa expands its sports nutrition offering to proteins.
“Promond is the first step in this regard,” says Majeed. “Sabinsa will be expanding the protein range in two different directions. One with more newer and affordable proteins and another expanding the functionality of protein supplements using some of its proprietary ingredients such as our shelf-stable probiotic LactoSpore.”
Sabinsa has also announced that Shaheen Majeed will be a speaker at the AHPA Botanical Congress on September 29, following SupplySide West. The session will be called, “The Makings of a Sound International Supply Chain.” Sabinsa is a sponsor of the Botanical Congress.
NutritionInsight recently recorded a video interview with Majeed at Vitafoods Asia in Singapore. You can find it here.
